Power system studies & modelling

As part of our consultancy services, Utilligence can provide a comprehensive range of modelling and simulation services for all power systems/power station components for steady state, short circuit, RMS, EMT, harmonic, protection and arc flash.

This includes building models suitable for individual power station grid code compliance, G5/5, P28, P29, or full power system grid integration or expansion planning studies. Our expert teams use a range of software to support your requirements, including DIgSILENT, PowerFactory and ERACS.

Power flow studies

Performed on distribution networks or individual sites for a range of purposes, The results of power flow studies often feed into other research and testing, such as protection coordination, arc flash and connection studies.

Short circuit and fault studies

Short circuit studies enable the assessment of equipment rating (e.g., switchgear, cables and generation), and provide input into other studies, such as protection coordination and earthing design.

Dynamic studies

It’s essential that power systems remain stable for a variety of disturbances, considering a wide range of dynamic responses for different equipment and system configurations, to assess the stability of any network.

Utilligence can:

  • Develop dynamic models for all types of equipment.
  • Create network and controller models in DIgSILENT PowerFactory simulations, from single machine, to full power systems
  • Determine appropriate scenarios to study and conduct all necessary performing stability studies.
  • Design mitigation measures to improve or maintain power system stability.
  • Carry out grid code compliance or grid integration studies for any generator type.

Transient and harmonics studies

Transient studies

EMT studies can be used in insulation coordination procedures to define minimum insulation requirements for equipment, according to regulatory standards (IEC60071, IEEE C62.82.2 2022), or to design mitigation measures such as surge arresters and sheath voltage limiters.We can also conduct electromagnetic transient (EMT) studies, to calculate the maximum system overvoltage due to fault occurrence or clearing, switching transients, harmonic resonance and transformer energization.

Harmonics studies

Harmonics in power systems can cause overvoltage, excessive heating of equipment, and poor power quality for end-users. All new connections to the DNO must be below G5/5 limits.

Other on-site studies

Protection coordination

Discrimination studies are an essential requirement to ensure that onsite power system protection will operate correctly and only disconnect faulty equipment. It will also ensure that the minimum amount of damage to plant occurs in the case of a system failure. Our discrimination studies will also identify any plant that is operating outside of its safe working parameters.

G99 power system studies:

For DNOs needing to fulfil their regulatory obligations, Utilligence offers a range of typical G5, P28, P28-type studies, and all the other dynamic studies required prior to energisation.

Arc flash assessments:

Arc flash studies quantify the hazards posed by these faults, allowing suitable PPE and other mitigations to be put in place, in accordance with IEEE 1584.

Cable pulling studies:

When pulling cables into trenches or ducts, it is essential that the cable is not damaged by the amount of force applied.

Building cable routes, designing cable trenches and calculating the maximum forwards and backwards force that can be applied is essential for optimal efficiency, safety and performance. We will also calculate the optimal tension on the cable, to avoid any damage during the cable pulling process.

Substation earthing studies:

When a new substation is built, it must be effectively connected to an earthing system as a requirement of the Electricity At Work Regulations and The Electricity Supply Continuity And Quality Regulations. If the earthing is not properly designed, a dangerous voltage can exist on the plant.
